I love farmers’ markets, I always have . . . they make me happy!

ver since I can remember going to the Marché was a treat! I don’t know if I was attracted to all the activity, the profusion of colors, the food that made my mouth water, or if it was the people selling all those goodies, but I suspect it was all of it.

I’d follow my mother around and someone would always ask about la petite fille and would she like to taste or have a little something. No matter what it was, it was special, I was special or so I felt.

To this day no matter what market I go to or what country it’s in I have similar feelings, being there is special. The ability to get my food from the people that produce it is a privilege I cherish.

I buy what tempts me, always more than I thought I needed, and always money well spent. I walk away laden with the ingredients that will nourish us for the week, a big smile on my face and already looking forward to my next visit.

I go to a farmers market in Burlington, Vermont where fresh food is a focus to many of the people living there. I love going there because I not only get to interact with Vermont locals but I also get to see what the have brought and what they have to offer. Also some of the best maple syrup products come from there…what a treat!

local Pleasantville market is my favorite one to go to. It has musicians, and many home made foods. My favorite stand there is an Indian women who has many different spices and pre-made sauces to go over food, they are very exotic and I enjoy cooking with them for my family.

I was just recently in Toronto and happened upon the Farmer’s Market in old town Toronto. It was great atmosphere! There were lots of fresh veggies on display, with peppers in abundance!

I’ve never been to a Farmer’s Market I didn’t love.
As for favorites, I’m torn between Chamonix, France and Chiang Mai, Thailand. Chamonix was nice because the scenery was beautiful, there were musicians playing classical music, and there were lots of delicious meats and cheeses. The Chiang Mai market was really cool because it was huge (the size of a football field) and filled to the brim with baskets filled with unusual foods and spices.

i am very knowledgeable about all the markets south of the border as i have cooked for many years in various south american countries. my most favorite one of all is in agrentina, san thelmo. where antiques are sold side be side with an abundance of glorious food products. heavenly really, a must see. peru was fabulous for it’s guttural rawness, and manta for the fish trade.

My favorite farmer’s market is in Martha’s Vineyard where the locals all come to sell what they have grown in their gradens or hand-made. As far as I’m concerned the essentials you need at a summer farmer’s market are: Fresh basil, hand-picked corn, and freshly squeezed lemonade. They have it all there and more! Going there on a warm summer morning is yet another reason why you want to visit the Vineyard.

My favorite farmers’ market is a new-ish one in Otisville NY – 2-3 years old. What’s cool about this is it is called ‘The Farmer’s Daughter’ and that is exactly what it is. Trish Southway saw that even though this is not a well-to-do part of NY State people still want to buy and eat fresh food and Trish saw there was a market for that and she is selling her family’s produce and fruit. I take my French market basket to her stand every Saturday and 1) I always fill it up with lovely produce and 2) someone asks me where I got my terrific basket.

My favorite farmers market is right here in downtown Manhattan. What’s so cool about it is the low key neighborhood vibe that it has, even with fabulous fresh food from the local area in NJ and Long Island. Great fresh seafood, fabulous veggies..and it’s just around the corner from me! Twice a week I can load up on the freshest of all kinds of things. Whatever is in that week is what we eat..the way it should be. I love as things change through the season into the late fall. I own two French market baskets and I love using them!
